Sioux Falls, SD – South Dakota residents face a frigid start to the New Year as plunging temperatures and snow are expected to impact the region through Sunday. The National Weather Service predicts lows in the single digits, with wind chills dipping below zero by Friday. Snowfall will begin tonight, primarily along the I-90 corridor, and is expected to continue into the weekend, potentially creating hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service, light snow flurries could develop late tonight and accumulate into Thursday, with an additional round of snow likely on Saturday and Sunday. Areas near Sioux Falls could see a few inches of accumulation, especially along major roadways, including I-90. Drivers should exercise caution and plan for reduced visibility and slippery conditions during peak snow periods.
Temperatures will remain dangerously low, with highs reaching only 14 degrees on Saturday and lows dropping as far as 3 degrees on Friday night. Wind chills could reach the negative teens, posing risks for frostbite. Residents are urged to bundle up, limit outdoor exposure, and ensure pets are protected from the cold.
The weather pattern will ease slightly early next week, with Monday bringing partly sunny skies and highs in the low teens. However, the bitter cold and snow make this a critical time to check on neighbors, stay informed through weather alerts, and prepare for possible delays on the road.
