Olympia, WA – A minor earthquake shook areas near Montesano and Olympia on Tuesday morning, catching residents off guard. The tremor, with a magnitude of 2.7, struck at 11:11 a.m. UTC.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake’s epicenter was located seven kilometers north-northwest of Montesano, at a depth of 39.4 kilometers. While minor, the seismic event was reportedly felt in Olympia and nearby communities. No damage or injuries have been reported.

Earthquakes of this magnitude are common in seismically active regions like Western Washington. The region, near the Pacific Northwest’s Cascadia Subduction Zone, experiences frequent tremors as tectonic plates shift beneath the surface.

Local authorities have not issued any warnings related to the incident. However, emergency experts encourage residents to remain prepared for larger quakes by having an emergency plan and supplies ready.

Residents who felt the earthquake can submit reports through the USGS “Felt Report” system, helping scientists better understand regional seismic activity.

USGS continues to monitor the area for additional seismic events. While small, the earthquake serves as a reminder of the importance of earthquake preparedness for all Washington residents.
