Sacramento, CA – A storm system is expected to bring rain and snow to Northern California from Thursday through early Saturday. The bulk of the precipitation will fall Friday, posing challenges for New Year’s travelers returning home.
The National Weather Service in Sacramento reports minor travel disruptions are likely. Slick roads and potential flooding are expected in lower elevations, while snow-covered roads will impact higher altitudes. Snow levels will start at 8,000–9,000 feet Thursday night and drop to 5,000–6,000 feet by Friday evening.
Rainfall totals are predicted to reach up to 1 inch in the valley and up to 2 inches in foothill regions. The heaviest rain and snow are expected Friday afternoon, impacting major roadways, including Interstate 80 and Highway 50.
Drivers should allow extra time and prepare for hazardous road conditions, especially in mountain passes. Travelers returning from New Year’s Eve events should stay informed of updates.
For those in lower elevations, ponding water could cause delays. Snowfall in the Sierra Nevada may require chains or alternative routes.
