Marquette, MI – Lake-effect snow will begin late tonight across Michigan’s western and northwest wind belts, creating hazardous conditions. Heavy snow showers are expected to persist through New Year’s Day, impacting travel in areas near Lake Superior.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service, the worst travel conditions will affect Copper Country and areas stretching from Munising to the east. Motorists can expect reduced visibility and slippery roads. Snow intensity may vary significantly, even across short distances, making travel planning essential.

Mostly cloudy skies will dominate, with temperatures dropping to 10–17°F inland and 18–25°F near the lakeshores tonight. Snowfall totals could range from 16–30 inches by Thursday. The heaviest snowfall will focus on areas west-northwest of Lake Superior.

Officials urge caution for those traveling over New Year’s Day and recommend checking forecasts regularly. Prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions, especially in areas prone to heavy snow bands. Visibility may reduce sharply, posing risks to drivers in affected regions.
