Newport, NC — A warm and foggy start to New Year’s Day is in store for Eastern North Carolina, followed by clear skies and cooler temperatures. Morning commuters and holiday travelers should expect patchy fog before 9 a.m. Wednesday, reducing visibility along key routes, including U.S. Route 70.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will climb to a high of 73 degrees on Tuesday, staying 10–20 degrees above seasonal norms. Spotty light showers are possible along the Outer Banks, but Newport and surrounding areas will remain dry. A cooling trend begins Wednesday evening, with lows dipping into the 30s by Thursday night.

What to Expect This Week:

• Today (Tuesday): Patchy fog clears by 9 a.m., giving way to mostly sunny skies with a high of 73°F. Winds will be light but may gust up to 21 mph.

• Tonight: Clear skies and mild temperatures, with a low around 47°F.

• Wednesday (New Year’s Day): Sunny with a high of 57°F. Light southwest winds may gust to 23 mph.

• Thursday: Temperatures drop sharply, with highs near 50°F and lows around 31°F by evening.

Drivers should remain cautious during foggy conditions Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, particularly near water or low-lying areas where visibility may be reduced. Residents should also prepare for colder weather later this week, ensuring outdoor plants and pipes are protected as temperatures plunge Thursday night.
