Boonville, NY – Northern Oneida County is under a Lake-Effect Snow Warning, with up to 14 inches of snow expected through early Wednesday. The storm will begin overnight and continue to impact the region with hazardous conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest snowfall will occur in narrow, intense bands. Total snow accumulations are expected to range between 6 and 14 inches, with visibility greatly reduced in affected areas. The warning is in effect from midnight tonight until 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Travel is expected to be challenging, particularly during the Tuesday morning and evening commutes. Drivers are urged to be cautious, as rapidly changing weather conditions may occur just a few miles apart. Officials recommend carrying emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water, for those who must travel.

The lake-effect snow event is fueled by cold air moving over the warmer waters of Lake Ontario, creating unpredictable and localized snowfall patterns. Areas under the most intense snow bands will see the highest accumulations, while neighboring locations may experience lighter snowfall or dry conditions.

Residents should prepare for sudden weather changes and delays. For real-time road updates, call 511 for state travel information.

This storm serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of lake-effect snow, which can shift quickly and create hazardous conditions in minutes.
