Des Moines, IA – Residents in central Iowa should prepare for a snowy weekend as light snow is expected to return Saturday evening into Sunday. Accumulations of up to 1 inch or less are predicted for Des Moines and surrounding areas, which could create slippery roads. Today, flurries are likely in eastern Iowa with minimal accumulation.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines, light snow will taper off today but will pick up again late Saturday. Saturday evening’s snowfall will likely begin after sunset and continue through Sunday afternoon. Temperatures will hover near freezing, with lows reaching 16°F overnight. Wind chills could make conditions feel much colder.

By Sunday, snow is forecasted to extend into the afternoon, with roads along I-35 and local highways potentially becoming slick. Drivers are urged to use caution during the evening hours, as visibility may be reduced, and untreated surfaces could freeze.

Looking ahead, Monday will bring a significant drop in temperatures, with highs only reaching 18°F under mostly sunny skies. Lows Monday night will plummet to 6°F, marking a colder start to the week. Tuesday will offer some relief with sunny skies and a high near 17°F.

Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates and plan travel cautiously during snowfall periods. Stocking vehicles with winter safety kits and checking road conditions before heading out is advised.
