Newport, NC – A winter storm system is expected to bring snow, sleet, and freezing rain across eastern North Carolina tonight. Residents are urged to drive cautiously and prepare for icy roadways, particularly inland and on bridges and overpasses.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 4 p.m. Friday until 10 a.m. Saturday. Snow and ice accumulation could reach up to half an inch in some areas, making conditions hazardous for travel. Areas most affected include Greenville, Kinston, and surrounding inland communities.
Tonight, rain will transition to sleet and freezing rain after midnight, with temperatures dropping to 32°F. Winds will be calm, but icy surfaces are expected to cause delays and potential accidents. For the weekend, Saturday morning brings a chance of lingering rain before skies clear by the afternoon. Highs will reach 46°F, with a low of 25°F Saturday night.
Sunday will bring mostly sunny skies with a high of 45°F and light winds, providing relief after the storm. Clear conditions are expected to continue through early next week, with sunny skies and temperatures climbing into the 50s by Monday.
Residents are encouraged to avoid non-essential travel tonight and monitor updates from local authorities. Ensure sidewalks and driveways are treated for ice to avoid slips and falls. For more detailed forecasts, visit weather.gov/mhx.
