Birmingham, AL – Residents across central Alabama are urged to exercise caution as a Winter Storm Warning continues through Friday night. Freezing rain and sleet have created hazardous road conditions in counties including Pickens, Tuscaloosa, and Talladega. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that icy roads are dangerous, and unnecessary travel should be avoided.
According to the NWS, freezing rain began early Friday morning and is expected to persist throughout the day. Ice accumulations, though less than half an inch, are causing slippery surfaces and hazardous conditions on highways and bridges. Areas along I-20 and I-65 are particularly affected, with law enforcement advising drivers to use extreme caution or delay travel when possible.
By Friday night, temperatures will drop to a low of 29°F, increasing the risk of black ice formation. Officials expect conditions to improve slightly on Saturday, with partly sunny skies and a high of 36°F. However, nighttime lows near 19°F could maintain slick spots on untreated roads.
The five-day outlook shows a gradual warm-up, with Sunday reaching a high near 43°F under sunny skies. By Monday, highs will climb to 44°F, but morning lows will remain near freezing.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and prepare for continued hazardous travel. Avoid travel unless absolutely necessary, and ensure your vehicle is equipped for icy conditions if you must venture out.
