Quad Cities, IA-IL – Light snow is set to blanket parts of Illinois, Missouri, and Iowa overnight Thursday into Friday, potentially complicating morning travel. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a special weather statement Thursday afternoon, highlighting slick conditions and reduced visibility.

According to the NWS, the snowfall will begin overnight and persist through Friday morning, tapering off by the afternoon. Accumulations are expected to reach 1 to 2 inches, primarily south and east of a line from Kahoka, Missouri, to Princeton, Illinois. Cities including Fort Madison, Hennepin, and Carthage could see snow-covered roads and travel disruptions.

Commuters should plan for extra travel time Friday morning as untreated surfaces may become slippery. Officials advise caution, especially on bridges and overpasses, where ice can form more quickly. Visibility may also drop during peak snowfall hours, increasing the potential for traffic delays.

The weather service emphasized the need for preparedness, urging residents to monitor updated forecasts and consider alternative travel plans if conditions worsen. Those traveling south through Missouri or east toward Illinois should remain especially vigilant.

The NWS predicts the system will exit the region by Friday afternoon, with temperatures remaining near freezing. Any lingering snow and ice could refreeze overnight, extending hazardous travel conditions into Saturday.

This event marks the first significant snowfall of January for the Quad Cities area, with meteorologists monitoring additional systems expected later this month. Residents are encouraged to clear sidewalks promptly and check on neighbors who may need assistance in winter conditions.
