Louisville, KY – A winter storm is set to impact Kentucky and southern Indiana Friday, bringing significant snowfall overnight.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Louisville issued a Winter Storm Warning, predicting 3 to 6 inches of snow for most areas. Far southern Kentucky, including regions along the Tennessee border, could see 4 to 6 inches or more in isolated spots. This storm marks one of the most significant weather events of the season.
According to the NWS, snowfall will begin Friday evening and intensify into the night, impacting travel across both states. Forecasters expressed high confidence in snowfall but medium confidence in exact totals. They urge residents to monitor road conditions and avoid unnecessary travel.
Western Kentucky may see the highest accumulations, with totals likely exceeding 6 inches in some localized areas. Snowfall will taper off by Saturday morning, leaving hazardous road conditions in its wake.
The NWS also highlighted potential disruptions caused by the storm, including reduced visibility and slick roads. Schools, businesses, and local authorities in affected areas are preparing for closures and delays.
Officials recommend keeping emergency supplies on hand, including food, water, and flashlights. They also advise against traveling unless absolutely necessary. Drivers should reduce speeds and allow extra time to reach destinations.
