Birmingham, AL – A winter storm warning is in effect tonight, bringing snow, sleet, and freezing rain to Central Alabama. Roads, especially bridges and overpasses on highways like I-65 and I-59, are expected to become icy and hazardous.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm will begin after midnight and last through early Saturday morning. Total accumulations of 1 to 3 inches of snow and sleet, with ice reaching up to one-tenth of an inch, are likely. Travel during this period is strongly discouraged due to slick roadways and freezing conditions.

Friday’s high temperatures will hover around 34°F, with a chance of rain by late afternoon. Overnight lows will drop to 20°F, creating the potential for refreezing and more dangerous conditions. The cold weather will persist through the weekend, with highs of 36°F Saturday and sunny skies by Sunday with a high near 44°F.

Residents are urged to prepare by stocking up on food, water, and emergency supplies. Keep vehicles equipped with flashlights, blankets, and ice scrapers in case of emergencies. Stay updated on road closures and conditions through local media or state highway alerts.

The National Weather Service also issued a cold weather advisory for tonight, warning of wind chills as low as 10°F. Frostbite and hypothermia are risks for anyone exposed to the cold without adequate protection.

Take precautions to prevent frozen pipes by insulating exposed plumbing and allowing a slow drip of water overnight. Limit outdoor travel and monitor vulnerable neighbors during this severe weather event.
