Blacksburg, VA – Bitterly cold temperatures and snow are forecast to grip southwest Virginia starting Friday night, with snow accumulations of 2–5 inches possible along Route 460 and nearby areas. Residents are urged to prepare for icy roads and dangerously low wind chills through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a low-pressure system will bring snow to the area late Friday, continuing through early Saturday morning. Snowfall is expected to begin after 7 p.m. Friday, with heavier accumulation possible overnight. Wind chills could drop to 5 degrees below zero early Friday morning.
Roads, especially major routes like I-81 and Route 460, may become slick or hazardous during peak travel hours Friday night into Saturday. Motorists should delay unnecessary travel and keep an emergency kit in their vehicles.
Looking ahead, the weekend forecast shows temperatures remaining frigid, with Saturday’s high near 31 degrees and lows Saturday night dipping to 15. Sunday is expected to bring sunshine but cold conditions, with a high of 36 degrees.
Residents should monitor local weather updates and check in on vulnerable neighbors to ensure they stay warm. The National Weather Service advises wearing layers, limiting outdoor exposure, and securing outdoor items against strong northwest winds, which could gust up to 22 mph.
