Jacksonville, FL – A freeze warning remains in effect for Jacksonville and surrounding areas as sub-freezing temperatures grip Northeast Florida overnight into Thursday morning. Temperatures could drop as low as 25 degrees, with wind chills making it feel like 17 degrees.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the freeze warning will last until 9 a.m. Thursday, while a cold weather advisory remains active from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. These conditions will affect eastern Clay and Putnam counties and other parts of the region. NWS forecasts that even tender plants and outdoor pets will need extra protection from the cold.
Residents are urged to take precautions to prevent hypothermia or frostbite. The elderly, young children, and those experiencing homelessness are particularly vulnerable. Authorities advise wearing appropriate layers, including hats and gloves, while outdoors. To protect homes, residents should wrap water pipes or allow them to drip overnight.
By Thursday evening, a freeze watch will be in effect again through Friday morning, with lows potentially hitting 29 degrees. Officials recommend bringing sensitive plants indoors and ensuring outdoor animals have adequate shelter.
As Northeast Florida braces for its coldest weather of the season, residents are encouraged to check on neighbors and stay informed about the latest weather conditions.
