Tucson, AZ – The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a freeze warning for Tucson and surrounding areas, expecting significant drops in temperature through Friday morning. The advisory follows a previously canceled wind warning as conditions stabilize but remain bitterly cold.
According to the NWS, the first freeze warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. Thursday. A second freeze warning will begin Thursday at 10 p.m. and continue until Friday morning. During these periods, temperatures could plummet as low as 24 degrees in Tucson, while rural areas might experience lows of 21 degrees or colder.
The warning encompasses South-Central Pinal County, Southeast Pinal County, and the Tohono O’odham Nation. Areas such as Marana, Green Valley, and Sells are also affected. Frost and freeze conditions are likely to harm unprotected vegetation and outdoor plumbing, particularly during the early morning hours.
Residents should take precautions, including covering plants and insulating outdoor pipes. Sensitive crops in rural areas are especially vulnerable, with temperatures expected to reach the mid-teens. Eastern Cochise County, for example, may see lows as extreme as 12 degrees overnight.
The cold snap is forecasted to persist into the weekend. Warmer conditions could return by next week, but no immediate relief is expected. Officials urge individuals to limit outdoor activities during the coldest hours and to keep pets indoors for safety.
