Garrett County, MD – A winter weather advisory remains in effect for Garrett County, Maryland, and Western Mineral County, West Virginia, through noon Thursday. Residents should prepare for up to 3 inches of additional snowfall overnight, combined with wind gusts reaching 45 mph.
According to the National Weather Service, slippery road conditions are expected, creating challenges for Thursday morning commuters. The advisory was issued Wednesday evening and warns of the potential for hazardous travel and falling tree branches due to high winds.
Drivers are advised to slow down and exercise caution while traveling. The Maryland State Highway Administration recommends using 511 to check road conditions before leaving home. The service has already treated major roads in the area but notes that conditions may worsen as snowfall continues overnight.
Residents are urged to stay indoors if possible. If venturing outside, dress in layers, and cover exposed skin to prevent frostbite. Experts suggest wearing gloves, scarves, and hats to retain body heat.
Winds, combined with the heavy snowfall, could lead to downed tree branches and power outages. Officials remind homeowners to prepare emergency kits, including flashlights, batteries, and non-perishable food, in case of outages.
The storm is part of a larger system impacting the Mid-Atlantic region this week. Meteorologists predict improving conditions by midday Thursday, but lingering snow may cause delays.
