Raleigh, NC – A cold weather advisory is in effect for Central North Carolina starting tonight. Residents should brace for frigid temperatures, with wind chills expected to drop as low as 5 to 10 degrees.
The National Weather Service issued the advisory from 7 p.m. Wednesday through 9 a.m. Thursday. Frostbite and hypothermia pose a significant risk to individuals without proper protection, officials said. Prolonged exposure to these temperatures may lead to severe cold-related injuries or death if precautions aren’t taken.
The advisory covers several areas, including Raleigh, Durham, and Fayetteville. Communities throughout the region are encouraged to stay indoors and ensure that pets and livestock are adequately sheltered.
According to the NWS, residents should avoid using outdoor heaters or grills indoors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Instead, ensure portable heaters are operating safely and in compliance with manufacturers’ instructions. It is also critical to check on elderly neighbors or those vulnerable to the cold.
Authorities advise bundling up in layers and covering exposed skin when stepping outdoors. Keep emergency supplies handy in case of power outages due to the extreme cold.
Temperatures will slowly rise after Thursday morning but are expected to remain near freezing for much of the week.
