Tulsa, OK – A winter storm warning will bring heavy snow and icy conditions to parts of Arkansas and Oklahoma starting Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service in Tulsa issued the alert Wednesday, warning of snow accumulations between 3 and 6 inches across the region. Areas like Carroll, Madison, and Washington Counties in Arkansas, as well as Choctaw, Pittsburg, and Le Flore Counties in Oklahoma, will be hit hardest. The storm begins at 6 a.m. Thursday and continues through noon Friday.

According to the weather service, travel conditions will deteriorate quickly due to snow-covered and icy roads. Morning and evening commutes on Thursday are expected to be hazardous. Residents in Fayetteville, Springdale, Fort Smith, and surrounding areas should prepare for delays and disruptions.

The storm is forecast to bring mixed precipitation, including light ice accumulation, near the Red River. Temperatures will remain near freezing, heightening risks for slick conditions.

The National Weather Service advises travelers to pack flashlights, food, and water in case of roadside emergencies. For road conditions, Arkansas residents can visit idrivearkansas.com, while Oklahoma drivers should check okRoads.org.

Officials urge people to stay off roads if possible, especially during peak snowfall hours Thursday. Crews will be working around the clock to clear major highways, but secondary roads may remain impassable.

Prepare now by securing groceries, charging devices, and checking on vulnerable neighbors. This storm is the first significant snowfall of the year, and its impacts could linger into the weekend.
