Marquette, MI – Drivers across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula are being urged to take precautions as lake effect snow continues through Thursday, bringing hazardous conditions to the region. Localized snowfall between Skandia and Eben Junction could total 6 to 8 inches by Thursday afternoon, creating dangerous travel on rural and county roads.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, additional snowfall of 1 to 2 inches is expected elsewhere across the area today. Fluffy snow combined with icy patches may significantly reduce visibility, especially along the Marquette-Alger county line and near Lake Superior’s wind belts. Motorists should maintain a safe distance between vehicles, keep headlights on, and drive slowly, even during daylight hours.
The extended forecast for Marquette shows a break from snow Thursday afternoon, with partly sunny skies and a high of 26°F. However, chances for additional snow showers return Friday evening, with temperatures hovering near 18°F. Saturday will bring cloudy conditions, with snow showers likely by nightfall.
Residents are encouraged to clear sidewalks and driveways promptly as the snow continues to fall. Those planning to travel along major routes like US-41 or M-28 should monitor local updates and avoid non-essential trips during peak snowfall periods.
Spotters in the region are encouraged to report snowfall totals to the National Weather Service through their website or social media.
