Birmingham, AL – A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for much of central Alabama, with heavy snow and freezing rain likely Thursday night into Friday. The system is expected to bring snow accumulations of 2-5 inches, creating dangerous travel conditions across major roads, including I-20 and I-59.
According to the National Weather Service, precipitation will likely begin as rain Thursday evening before transitioning to snow and sleet overnight. Roads and bridges will become slick, and driving conditions could range from hazardous to impossible by early Friday morning. Residents are advised to delay all non-essential travel, prepare emergency kits for their vehicles, and monitor weather updates.
Thursday’s Forecast:
Expect sunny skies during the day, with a high near 42°F. Clouds will increase late in the day, with rain beginning after sunset.
Thursday Night into Friday:
Rain will mix with snow and sleet after midnight, intensifying before dawn. Temperatures will drop to 31°F, with icy road conditions likely.
Friday:
Snowfall will continue in the morning, tapering off in the afternoon. High temperatures will reach 35°F. The storm could disrupt commutes and lead to infrastructure delays.
Looking ahead, clear skies are forecast for Saturday, with highs in the upper 30s, before temperatures warm into the 40s by Sunday. However, black ice may linger on untreated surfaces through the weekend.
Prepare now by stocking up on supplies, ensuring vehicles are winter-ready, and planning ahead for potential delays.
