Richmond, VA – A fast-moving winter storm is expected to bring accumulating snow to northern and central Virginia starting Friday night. Forecasts predict slippery roads, travel delays, and possible impacts to I-95 and surrounding highways during peak weekend travel hours.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Wakefield, there’s a 50-80% chance of at least 2 inches of snow beginning Friday evening and continuing into Saturday. Areas along the I-95 corridor, including Richmond and Petersburg, may see heavier snowfall totals, making road conditions dangerous. Officials advise drivers to monitor weather updates and avoid non-essential travel during the storm.
The extended forecast indicates sunny but cold conditions on Thursday with highs near 28°F and lows of 17°F. Snow is forecast to begin late Friday with an 80% chance of precipitation. Saturday will remain snowy with high temperatures near 35°F, followed by clearing skies Saturday night. By Sunday, sunny conditions return, but overnight lows could drop to 21°F, maintaining icy conditions on untreated roads.
Residents should prepare for delays, stock up on essentials, and check local updates on school closures or altered schedules. Spotters are encouraged to report snow totals to the NWS to assist with forecasts.
