Concerns arise over wildfires in West Texas and New Mexico due to strong winds and dry fuel

Red Flag Warnings Issued Across West Texas and Neighboring States Due to Critical Fire Danger

On Monday, red flag warnings were issued for areas in West Texas, eastern New Mexico, and the Oklahoma, Kansas, and Colorado corner region, signaling a heightened risk of wildfires.

The National Weather Service (NWS) cited a combination of warm temperatures, gusty winds, and low humidity as factors creating conditions conducive to dangerous fires. Wind gusts exceeding 60 mph were reported, with relative humidity dropping to the low teens or even single digits in some areas.

Residents are urged to exercise caution by avoiding open flames and activities that could produce sparks. The NWS also advised extinguishing smoking materials inside vehicles, warning that accidental ignitions could rapidly develop into wind-driven wildfires.

The red flag warnings are expected to remain in effect through Monday evening, with officials closely monitoring conditions to mitigate potential risks.
