NY and NJ areas under winter weather advisory for icy conditions

NYC weather forecast

Audrey Puente from FOX 5 NY provides the weather forecast for Monday morning’s commute. Will it be icy?

A winter weather advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service for our area, which will be in effect from 10 p.m. Sunday evening until 11 a.m. Monday.

In New Jersey, Western Passaic County experiences the impact, while in New York, the affected counties include Northern Westchester, Orange, Putnam, and Rockland.

“We are anticipating snowfall and potentially hazardous travel conditions in the northern areas, which is why the advisory has been issued,” explained Audrey Puente from FOX 5 NY.

The National Weather Service reports that there will be a transition from light snow to freezing rain in certain parts of our local area on Sunday evening, continuing into early Monday morning.

The Northeast and mid-Atlantic regions are bracing themselves for another round of rain, snow, and ice, which could potentially cause travel disruptions as we approach the end of the weekend and enter the final week before the Christmas holiday.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, the upcoming winter weather and rain on Sunday are a result of the same system that caused an ice storm in parts of the Midwest over the weekend.

According to the graphic provided by FOX Weather, there is a weather system bringing rain and snow into the mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions on Sunday. The precipitation is expected to last through Monday.

The storm will collide with the remaining arctic air over the Northeast, resulting in a combination of snow and/or freezing rain in the interior areas of the region on Sunday and Monday.

Areas along the East Coast will continue to experience precipitation in the form of rain due to winds coming off the Atlantic, according to FOX Weather Meteorologist Kendall Smith. However, higher elevations will see a transition to snow as temperatures drop to or below freezing.

The Northeast and mid-Atlantic regions can expect significant snowfall, as depicted in this graphic from FOX Weather.

In parts of Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut in New England, there is a possibility of receiving a few inches of snow, primarily in the higher elevations.

Rain is forecasted in the vicinity of the Interstate 95 corridor.

According to Smith, there is a possibility of snow for some individuals near the tri-state area of New York City. However, he believes that the city itself will once again miss out on the snowy weather, causing a great deal of frustration.

The graphic displays the winter weather alerts in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic region.

Winter weather alerts have been issued due to the threats, spanning from the Great Lakes through the mid-Atlantic and into the Northeast.
