New Mexico Braces for Winter Storm with Snowfall and Freezing Temperatures

Temperatures will drop across New Mexico in anticipation of the winter storm. By Tuesday morning, light snow will begin in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico, moving southward throughout the day. Snow will reach I-40 by Tuesday evening, but Albuquerque and the Rio Grande Valley may experience only a few flurries or a light dusting due to the “snow hole” effect. Winds will intensify, with gusts reaching nearly 55 mph in the Albuquerque Metro by nightfall, leading to wind chills that may dip below zero by Wednesday morning. Southern New Mexico will see light rain and snow, with snow levels lowering to valley floors by late evening.

Wednesday:

Wednesday morning will be bitterly cold, with wind chills in the single digits and below zero. Light snow will continue to fall south of I-40, accumulating just a dusting to 1 inch in most areas. Some slippery spots are possible along I-40 and in southern New Mexico. Snow will taper off in the northern areas by the afternoon, with temperatures remaining in the 20s and 30s. A mix of snow and rain is expected in some areas, with wind chills remaining low.

Thursday:

Snow will return to southern, central, and eastern New Mexico early Thursday morning. Snowfall may be moderate at times, continuing through the afternoon. Accumulation is expected to be light, but some travel impacts are possible, especially on surfaces that are more likely to accumulate snow. High temperatures will stay just above freezing for most areas.

Friday:

Snow showers will linger in eastern New Mexico on Friday morning, with a few slick spots remaining due to the cold temperatures. Temperatures will warm slightly in the afternoon, though they will still be below average for this time of year.

Overall Snowfall:

Snow accumulations from this storm will generally be light, with most areas receiving a dusting to up to 3 inches. Mountain areas in southern New Mexico may receive up to 6 inches of snow. After the storm passes, warmer temperatures are expected by the weekend, though another storm system may bring light snow to northern New Mexico on Sunday.
