Tehachapi – Just three months after opening his Tehachapi-based business, A Barber Shop, Jesus “Chuy” Lopez faced an unprecedented challenge: a temporary closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Lopez persevered, and now, five years later, he’s celebrating a milestone anniversary with family, friends, and loyal customers.
A Fresh Start in Tehachapi
Lopez, who spent over two decades running a barber shop in Long Beach, decided to relocate to Tehachapi to provide a better environment for his family. “I pretty much made the move for my kids,” Lopez shared. His daughters—Mariah, Makayla, and Marina—were a key reason behind the transition from the bustling streets of Long Beach to the tranquility of Tehachapi’s mountain community.
Mariah reflected on the change: “When we lived in Long Beach, it was a lot of chaos. Living here is like a break. It’s a lot less overwhelming.”
Overcoming Pandemic Hurdles
Less than six months after opening, Lopez was forced to shut down his shop temporarily due to the pandemic—a first in his decades-long career. While his Long Beach location faced extended closures, Lopez managed to reopen in Tehachapi after just two months. “We get through that, we can get through anything,” he said.

Blending Big-City Vibes with Small-Town Charm
Lopez has brought a touch of Long Beach to his Tehachapi shop, blending urban energy with the warmth of a close-knit community. Customers enjoy not only expert haircuts but also engaging conversations and even games of pool.
“It’s very fun. Lots of haircuts. Nonstop,” said Noe Madera, a barber at the shop.
Mariah added, “He doesn’t get days off. On Sundays and Mondays, he still takes us on vacations or to Bakersfield. He’s always busy.”
A Thriving Community Hub
Over the years, A Barber Shop has become a bustling hub, attracting locals and fostering a sense of community. Lopez has even had the honor of cutting the hair of notable clients, including former NFL and USC quarterback Mark Sanchez.
Despite the challenges, Lopez’s commitment to his craft and his community has solidified his place in Tehachapi. “A Barber Shop” is open Monday through Saturday, and you can follow their journey on Facebook and Instagram.
Lopez’s story is a testament to resilience, family dedication, and the power of adapting to life’s challenges.
