Governor Demands Resignation of WNMU Board Amid Spending Scandal

New Mexico -New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has called for the immediate resignation of the board of regents at Western New Mexico University (WNMU), citing wasteful spending and failures in financial oversight. The announcement comes after the release of documents highlighting serious concerns about the governance of the Silver City-based institution.

In a year-end letter addressed to the university’s five-member board, Lujan Grisham emphasized the need for new leadership to restore the university’s focus on serving its students. She referred to the decision as a “clean slate” approach, aiming to bring the institution back to stability. The board’s chairwoman resigned on Tuesday in response to the controversy.

This shake-up follows the resignation of WNMU President Joseph Shepard, prompted by an investigation from the state auditor’s office. The inquiry revealed that top university officials, including the regents, had neglected their fiduciary responsibilities.

The controversy surrounding Shepard dates back to 2023 when state lawmakers raised concerns about his extravagant spending. These included international travel expenses, high-end furniture purchases, and misuse of a university credit card by his wife, Valerie Plame. Plame, a former CIA officer and 2020 congressional candidate, had used the card for personal expenses.

Shepard’s resignation package, which guarantees him a $1.9 million payout and a faculty position at the university, has sparked outrage among faculty and scrutiny from state officials. The State Ethics Commission is reviewing the severance agreement, while Attorney General Raúl Torrez has launched an investigation into whether the regents fulfilled their fiduciary duties.

Faculty senate president Phillip Schoenberg praised the governor’s decision to replace the regents, calling it a necessary step toward effective leadership. He expressed frustration over Shepard’s severance deal, particularly the provision allowing him to teach at the university’s business school.

Western New Mexico University, established in the 1890s before New Mexico achieved statehood, has undergone several name changes throughout its history. Shepard, who became president in 2011 after a 16-year tenure at Florida Gulf Coast University, now faces mounting criticism over his handling of the university’s finances.

The governor’s actions mark a pivotal moment for WNMU as it seeks to rebuild trust and refocus on its mission of serving students and the broader community.
