Fugitive captured in Leawood after weeks on the run, apprehended following short pursuit

A man, who had eluded authorities for almost two months, was apprehended near the Leawood Target following a high-speed chase early this morning.

In the early hours of Wednesday, January 1, the Leawood, Kansas Police Department noticed an individual near Target, specifically at W. 86th St. and State Line Rd., who seemed to be engaging in suspicious activity.

Law enforcement officials said that when they spoke to him, the individual provided false information, but they were eventually able to correctly identify him. According to the Johnson County Detention Center booking report, the suspect’s name is Sion P. Kavanaugh, a 38-year-old resident of Kansas City, Kansas.

Leawood Police discovered that Kavanaugh had outstanding felony charges in a neighboring jurisdiction. When the police tried to apprehend him, Kavanaugh attempted to flee.

After a short pursuit, Kavanaugh was apprehended and placed under arrest. He was then taken to the Johnson County Jail and charged with interference with law enforcement.

According to the records from Wyandotte County District Court, it was found that Kavanaugh was absent during a hearing on November 12, 2024. The charges against him included possession of opiates and use or possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia.

The authorities have not provided any additional details.
