Mother Honors Son Who Saved Fiancé’s Life

Harold Luster faced charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action for allegedly causing the death of his son, Kevin Ward.

Katherine Ward, overcome with tears, expressed her sorrow over the tragic loss of her baby, describing it as a senseless act, in an interview with KSDK on Friday.

Kevin, 26, and his fiancée, Kaitlyn, paid a visit to Luster, 61, on Christmas Eve before the couple intended to go to her home, Ward revealed.

According to Ward, the argument between Harold and another family member had taken place before the incident involving Kevin.

“He was already feeling quite upset about that incident.”

According to court records, Luster reportedly accused Ward’s mother of infidelity and accused Kaitlyn of withholding information.

According to the police, Luster seized a firearm when Kevin intervened.

Luster allegedly asked Kaitlyn if she wanted to be shot, as reported by the Kansas City Star.

During the argument, Ward received a call from Luster. She was in the midst of preparing for Christmas Eve and had plans to have the couple over.

While on the call, she heard her son questioning his father, asking why he was behaving this way and expressing that he didn’t deserve it. The call ended shortly after.

Luster proceeded to make a second call to Ward, claiming that he had shot someone.

According to Ward, Kevin was found dead with a gunshot wound to his forehead and his hands tucked in his pockets.

“He chose to sacrifice himself to save Kevin’s fiancée from being shot. He was the hero of that night, willing to give up his own life to protect her and their unborn child.”

The mother who was mourning the loss of her child stated that she never betrayed Luster. She characterized their relationship as being “on and off again.”

Kevin and Kaitlyn were eagerly anticipating the arrival of their baby in June, according to his mother.

Ward, a maintenance worker at the Missouri Department of Transportation, expressed that her son’s primary aspiration was to purchase a home for his child and establish a nurturing family.

With tears streaming down her face, Ward expressed her emotional anticipation of being the one to hold his baby for the first time, as her partner would be unable to do so.

“My son was an exceptional young man. He possessed remarkable qualities and did not deserve to experience that fateful night. If only he had never gone there, it would have spared him from this unimaginable ordeal. It feels as though I am trapped in a never-ending nightmare, desperately longing for an escape.”

On Wednesday night, Luster was taken into custody and formally charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in relation to the tragic loss of his own son.

Jefferson County has incarcerated him without any possibility of being released on bond.

According to KSDK, he pleaded not guilty on Thursday and is scheduled to return to court on January 3 for his bond review hearing.

Ward, who plans to attend the hearing, expressed her determination to ensure that her son’s death was not in vain.

Ward expressed her immense grief and frustration, stating, “It is heart-wrenching to witness my son struggling to breathe, walk, and see. He is no longer with us, and yet (Harold) gets to enjoy the simple act of sitting, even if it is in a jail cell. I want him to experience the pain and suffering of that memory every single day.”

“He deserves life when it comes to justice,” said the individual.
