Tragic hunting accident claims life of former Dodge City CC quarterback


According to various online sources, Tommy Lazzaro, a former quarterback for Dodge City Community College and Central Michigan University, tragically lost his life in a hunting accident in Florida on Sunday, December 22. The 27-year-old athlete had an impressive career, throwing for over 2,200 yards and leading Dodge City to a successful 9-3 finish in 2015. He later went on to play in 19 games during his time at CMU.

Lazzaro successfully guided Pine Creek High School in Monument, Colo., to consecutive Class 4A state championships in 2013 and 2014. Following his tenure at Pine Creek, Lazzaro made the move to Kansas. During his time at Pine Creek, Lazzaro also played a pivotal role in the team’s impressive 24-game winning streak. Additionally, he set multiple school records, including 3,340 passing yards and 37 touchdown passes.

Lazzaro made his debut as a starting quarterback in five games during his time at Div. I CMU in 2018. He showcased his skills by throwing for a season-high of 153 yards against Michigan State. In the following year, he had limited playing time in 13 games. During this period, he completed 4-of-8 passes for a total of 47 yards. Additionally, he displayed his versatility by running the ball 36 times for 161 yards and scoring eight touchdowns.

Lazzaro, a United States Army veteran, achieved the rank of sergeant during his service. In honor of his life, a Celebration of Life ceremony is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Dec. 28 in Destin, Fla.
