Two individuals lost their lives during a domestic incident in Great Bend on Friday morning. The Great Bend Police Department received a call at around 9:12 a.m. regarding an unknown disturbance in the 1500 block of 7th Street. As officers were en route to the location, dispatch informed them that it was, in fact, a domestic situation.
The Great Bend Police Department officers and Barton County Sheriff’s Office deputies gave chase to a Chevrolet pickup truck as it headed southbound on U.S. 281 Highway into Stafford County.
Thanks to the assistance of other officers, stop sticks were successfully deployed in Stafford County. Despite this, the driver of the Chevrolet pickup carried on westward on U.S. 50 Highway until losing control of the vehicle, causing it to roll over and come to a stop in a nearby field.
The officers approached the Chevrolet pickup and found the driver, who was the only person inside, dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The woman who was found at the scene was taken to the Great Bend Campus of the University of Kansas Health Systems by an ambulance from the Great Bend Fire Department. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The release of the victim and suspect’s names is currently on hold, as authorities are waiting to inform their respective family members.
The Great Bend Police Department received assistance in this case from various law enforcement agencies, including the Barton County Sheriff’s Office, the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office, and the St. John Police Department.
