Systane Eye Drops Recalled Over Fungal Contamination

Consumers are being urged to check their medicine cabinets after a brand of eye drops sold across the U.S. was recalled due to potential fungal contamination, which could cause serious vision damage.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Monday that Alcon Laboratories, based in Texas, has voluntarily recalled one lot of its “Systane Lubricant Eye Drops Ultra SPF, Single Vials On-the-Go.” The affected product, sold in 25-count packages, may be contaminated with fungus.

The recall was prompted by a customer complaint about a “foreign material” found in a sealed vial. Upon investigation, Alcon confirmed the material was fungal in nature.

Recall Details

Consumers can identify the recalled product by the following information on the packaging:

  • Lot Number: 10101
  • UPC: 300651432060
  • NDC: 0065-1432-06
  • Expiration Date: September 2025

The recalled eye drops were distributed nationwide through retail stores and online sellers.

Potential Risks of Contaminated Eye Drops

Fungal contamination in eye products can lead to severe infections that may impair vision. In rare cases, such infections can pose life-threatening risks, particularly for immunocompromised individuals.

While no infections related to this recall have been reported, the FDA and Alcon are urging consumers to discontinue use of the affected product immediately.

What to Do If You Own the Recalled Product

If you have purchased Systane Lubricant Eye Drops Ultra SPF, check the lot number and other details to confirm if your product is affected. Anyone who has experienced adverse effects after using the recalled product is encouraged to report the incident to the FDA’s Med Watch Adverse Event Reporting program.

Ongoing Concerns

This recall is the latest in a series of similar incidents involving tainted eye drops. In 2023 alone, dozens of products were pulled from the market due to contamination concerns.

Stay vigilant about product recalls to ensure your health and safety.
