Dense Fog and Snow Expected Thursday Night Along I-40

Christmas Day in New Mexico began with calm weather but dense fog in parts of the eastern region, creating hazardous conditions for holiday travelers. Drivers on I-40 and surrounding roads are urged to slow down and use low-beam headlights as visibility remains limited early in the day.

According to the National Weather Service, the fog is expected to clear by mid-afternoon as temperatures rise to 52°F under mostly sunny skies. However, a significant weather shift is anticipated late Thursday into Friday, with increasing cloud cover and a 20% chance of snow after midnight. Travelers should be prepared for icy roads, particularly in higher elevations near the Sandia Mountains and eastern plains.

Thursday will see daytime highs near 54°F, but a cold front moving in will bring overnight lows of 28°F, with a slight chance of rain transitioning to snow. Friday will remain cooler, with partly sunny skies and highs in the mid-40s.

Looking ahead, Saturday and Sunday are forecast to be mostly sunny, with temperatures reaching 60°F—ideal for post-Christmas activities. However, those traveling Thursday night into Friday morning should stay informed of changing weather conditions.

The National Weather Service advises travelers to monitor weather updates and pack emergency supplies for potential delays. While snow accumulation is expected to be light, icy roads could cause disruptions.
