A man was shot and killed by a homeowner during a home invasion in Otero County, New Mexico, according to the New Mexico State Police.
The incident occurred on Saturday, December 14, 2024, just before 9 p.m. in La Luz, located six miles north of Alamogordo. Authorities responded to a report of a break-in at a home on Appler Road, where the homeowner had fired a shot.
Investigators say Lucas Eli Moore, 45, of La Luz, knocked on the door before forcibly breaking in. The homeowner, along with his wife and three children, were inside at the time. The homeowner instructed Moore to leave, but he proceeded down the hall to the kitchen, which was near the children’s bedrooms.

After several warnings to leave, Moore attempted to strike the homeowner, prompting the homeowner to fire at least one shot from his handgun, striking Moore. The homeowner immediately called 911, and first responders arrived at the scene. Moore was pronounced dead at the residence.
Fortunately, the homeowner, his wife, and children were not injured. The children were asleep at the time and did not witness the incident.
The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is handling the case, and no charges have been filed against the homeowner. Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
