Man Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison for Fatal Assault on Genesee County Sheriff’s Deputy
A man has received a 20-year prison sentence for his role in the death of Sgt. Thomas Sanfratello, a veteran deputy with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office.
Michael Elmore, 33, pleaded guilty in November to aggravated manslaughter and obstructing governmental administration. His sentence, handed down on Tuesday, also includes five years of probation.
The incident occurred in March at the Batavia Downs casino, where Elmore, along with 39-year-old Lyndsey Jean Wilcox, was escorted out by Sgt. Sanfratello for causing a disturbance, according to Batavia Police.
Elmore later returned with a metal chain, which he used to strike Sgt. Sanfratello on the head. Police also reported that Wilcox attacked the deputy while he was attempting to arrest her. Sgt. Sanfratello, a 32-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, became unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Wilcox, who pleaded guilty to second-degree assault in November, is scheduled to be sentenced on January 21.
