At just 17 years old, Johnny Acee has already accomplished what few achieve in a lifetime. Fresh out of Marine Corps boot camp, the New Mexico native not only graduated at the top of his class but also earned a prestigious award and a rare promotion.
Acee, who dreamed of becoming a Marine since elementary school, recently graduated as the #1 recruit out of 584 in his United States Marine Corps (USMC) basic training class. In addition to this remarkable achievement, he received the Chesty Puller Recruit Company Honor Graduate Award, a distinction named after one of the most celebrated figures in Marine Corps history.
Lieutenant General Lewis “Chesty” Puller is a legendary Marine who served with distinction during World War II, the Korean War, and other historic battles, including Guadalcanal and Peleliu. His legacy of bravery and leadership makes the award named in his honor a particularly meaningful recognition.
Surviving Marine Corps basic training is an incredible feat on its own, but Acee’s accomplishments didn’t end there. In recognition of his outstanding performance, he was promoted to the rank of E3 Lance Corporal—a rare achievement for a recruit, especially one still in his teens.
The Marine Corps, known for its rigorous standards and emphasis on excellence, has a saying: “We’re looking for a few good men.” If you’re inspired by Johnny Acee’s story and interested in joining the ranks of the Marines, you can learn more by contacting an El Paso USMC recruiting office or visiting the official website.
