An NYPD sergeant has been arrested and suspended without pay after allegedly stealing $15 worth of cough syrup and drops from a Target store in Long Island during two separate incidents.
Sgt. Rayna Madho, a 41-year-old officer with the NYPD, has been with the force since 2006 and earned over $200,000 in fiscal 2024, including about $55,000 in overtime, according to the NY Daily News.
The alleged thefts took place during a citywide surge in retail crime, with Madho reportedly failing to scan all of her items at a self-checkout. This led store employees to contact the police.
Madho now faces two counts of petty larceny for the thefts, which occurred on November 24 and December 7 at the Target in Valley Stream. The stolen items included Zarbee’s Cough Syrup and Ricola Cough Drops.
Despite her long career and role as a leader in the Desi Society representing South Asian officers, Madho’s record includes past allegations of misconduct and civil lawsuits that resulted in a combined $161,000 in settlements.
She is currently suspended without pay and is scheduled to appear in court on December 27, where she will decide whether to plead guilty or not guilty.
