Snowy Evening in Northern Mountains with Colder Weather Coming Tomorrow

This afternoon, most of New Mexico will experience calm conditions, though some areas may see a bit of wind. However, light snow is expected to begin in the Northern Mountains later this evening.

A weak winter storm is currently moving into New Mexico. By evening, the associated low pressure system will be centered over the Northern Mountains, bringing light snow to the region through tomorrow morning. Roadway impacts are expected to be minimal, with the primary concern being Raton Pass. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for areas surrounding the pass from 2 p.m. today until 5 a.m. Tuesday, December 10th, with up to 5 inches of snow possible.

Along with the storm, a cold front is pushing through the state, which will bring gusty winds. This morning, the front was located over the Four Corners area, and it will continue to move southward throughout the day. By tomorrow, the cold air from the front will cause temperatures to drop by 10 to 15 degrees, with some of the coldest temperatures of the season expected on Wednesday morning.

The winter storm will be brief, with the low pressure system moving out of New Mexico on Tuesday. The snow will taper off, and temperatures will begin to rise again by Thursday.
