FDA’s Highest Risk Classification Due to Hidden Egg Allergen


According to Newsweek , Grand Central Bakery, based in Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, has voluntarily recalled several U-Bake pie products after an undeclared egg allergen was found in the dough. The recall, issued on October 25, has been classified as Class I by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), meaning there is a “reasonable probability” that exposure to the product could cause serious adverse health consequences or death.

The recall was triggered after an employee discovered that egg had been inadvertently added to the pie dough, though no injuries have been reported.

The affected pies, which were sold between August 1 and October 20, 2024, have expiration dates from February 1 to April 20, 2025. The recall includes 150 packages of Apple Pie, 366 packages of Marionberry Pie, and 2,637 packages of Chicken Pot Pie, as well as Bulk Pie Dough, all of which were sold in clear plastic packaging with Grand Central Bakery’s branded sticker labels. These labels did not disclose the presence of egg, which is one of the nine major allergens identified by the FDA.

The pies and dough were distributed with expiration dates ranging from February 1 to April 17, 2025. Consumers who purchased these products are urged to avoid consuming them if they have an egg allergy, as reactions to egg allergens can range from hives and vomiting to severe symptoms like throat swelling and difficulty breathing. In extreme cases, an allergic reaction could lead to anaphylaxis, a potentially fatal condition.

The recall affects several product types, including:

  • Apple Pie – 150 packages
  • Marionberry Pie – 366 packages
  • Chicken Pot Pie – 2,637 packages
  • Bulk Pie Dough – 1,450 packages

Grand Central Bakery’s CEO, Claire Randall, assured that the pies are safe for consumers who are not allergic to eggs. “The presence of egg does not affect the quality or taste,” she said. “No illnesses have been reported, and we discovered the issue ourselves. We are working closely with the FDA to follow their protocols.”

Eggs are a major allergen, and the FDA mandates that products containing them must clearly disclose their presence on labels to protect consumers. Anyone with an egg allergy who has purchased these recalled items should dispose of them or return them for a refund.
