A flower native exclusively to New Mexico has officially been declared endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). The swale paintbrush, a striking yellowish-red flower, is now known to exist only in one private location in southwest New Mexico.
The FWS announced the endangered status of the flower on Wednesday, Dec. 4, and has committed to developing a recovery plan under the Endangered Species Act to protect the swale paintbrush.
Historically, the swale paintbrush was found in 11 locations across Chihuahua and Durango in Mexico, as noted by the Center for Biological Diversity.
The push for protection began in 2007 when WildEarth Guardians petitioned to have the flower safeguarded. A subsequent lawsuit by the Center for Biological Diversity in 2020 led to the formal designation of the flower as endangered.
