New Mexico has unveiled an ambitious plan to redevelop the State Fairgrounds in Albuquerque’s International District. The proposal envisions transforming more than 200 acres of state-owned land into a vibrant hub that could include homes, businesses, and entertainment venues.
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced the redevelopment strategy yesterday, calling it a collaborative effort involving state, city, and county governments. She emphasized the potential for this project to spur major investments in the surrounding neighborhoods.
Starting today, the state is accepting proposals for master plans to guide the redevelopment process, with evaluations set to take place next month. During the 2024 legislative session, New Mexico lawmakers allocated $500,000 in capital outlay funding to EXPO New Mexico to assist with developing the master plan.
Initial concepts for the project include mixed-income housing options to address Albuquerque’s growing demand. The governor’s office estimates that 55,000 new residential units are needed to keep up with the city’s growth. Additionally, the redevelopment could feature a modern arena capable of hosting large concerts and events.
Officials are also exploring new locations for the state expo, aiming to ensure the long-term sustainability of the event while reimagining the fairgrounds.
