A 32-year-old woman died after jumping out of a moving car on the Long Island Expressway in Queens early Saturday morning and being struck by passing vehicles, according to police.
Police identified the woman as Priyanka Sewhani from Oyster Bay.
She leaped out of the vehicle, which sources informed 1010 WINS was an Uber, at 1:30 a.m. near the Kissena Boulevard overpass.
The 2019 Volkswagen was driving eastbound on the Long Island Expressway when Sewhani opened a door in the backseat and leaped, according to officials.
After stepping out of her car, Sewhani fell to the road, where passing cars hit her. Police said it was unclear how many automobiles had hit her.
The authorities declared her deceased upon arrival at the location.
According to police, the Uber driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, while one of the cars that hit her fled.
Paul Singh, an employee at Guru Grocery on Kissena Boulevard, witnessed commotion following the incident but was uncertain about its nature.
“I found myself on the service road last night, attempting to exit onto Kissena. To my surprise, the traffic was at a standstill; not a single car was moving,” shared Singh. “I couldn’t help but feel a sense of doubt and curiosity about the situation. I patiently waited for approximately 20 minutes, wondering what could be causing the delay.”
Singh expressed his disbelief when he learned about the incident.
“Some guys from the neighborhood, they were showing me videos of the scene itself,” he said. “A lot of cop presence, totally shut down.”
It is still unclear why Sewhani decided to leap out of her Uber. The incident is currently under investigation.
