Mother inflicted near-fatal injuries on her 1-year-old daughter simply because her screams “set her off” and then waited for more than three hours before calling 911; charged

In a terrifying event in Indiana, a 20-year-old pregnant woman identified as A. Ring is facing serious charges for allegedly inflicting life-threatening injuries on her 1-year-old daughter. After her actions nearly killed her young child, authorities arrested Ring and charged her with domestic assault and neglect of a dependent.

The incident occurred on the evening of November 19, 2024, when authorities received a troubling call about an unresponsive child at the home where Ring resided with her boyfriend. Responders arrived at the site about 5:25 p.m. and promptly transported the youngster to a nearby hospital. Following an assessment, medical specialists discovered that the toddler had sustained significant cranial injuries that required immediate surgery to relieve brain pressure. The medics also found several marks on the child’s body, indicating maltreatment.

During a thorough interrogation, Ring allegedly confessed to the assault on her daughter. According to police accounts, the event occurred earlier that day when the youngster became disturbed by an ill-fitting diaper and began crying excessively. Ring, overwhelmed and unable to handle the chaos, testified that the baby’s cries “set her off,” causing her frustration to escalate. She told how she treated the infant harshly, culminating in “throwing her” into a Pack ‘n Play, a form of playpen.

Ring initially attempted to justify her actions by explaining that her pregnancy had hindered her ability to carefully place the child in the playpen, implying that she had accidentally dropped the child. She also shared an incident where she had placed the toddler too close to a cabinet, causing the child to fall and hit her head on a metal piece, resulting in visible injuries on her forehead.

Adding to the gravity of the situation is the fact that Ring took an unusually long time to seek medical assistance for her daughter. The child displayed concerning signs of distress, such as lethargy and moments of unconsciousness, well before emergency services were contacted. It was only after her boyfriend returned from work and they discussed the deteriorating condition of the child that Ring finally made the decision to call 911. Shockingly, this call was made more than three hours after the initial incident occurred.

Ring is currently being held at the county’s jail, with her bond set at $15,000, which must be paid in cash. The court has issued a strict order prohibiting any communication between Ring and her daughter, highlighting the seriousness of the charges against her. Her preliminary court appearance has been scheduled for November 25, early next week.

This case has not only shed light on the severe outcomes of parental neglect and abuse, but it has also sparked discussions about the support systems in place for parents who are facing mental health issues and the pressures of caregiving. The community and local authorities are currently grappling with how to prevent similar tragedies in the future and what actions can be taken to safeguard the most vulnerable individuals from such profound harm.
