More Information About The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps

In a published article by Stars and Stripes, Sea Cadets is a program for youth ages 11 to 17 that is not a recruiter for the Navy or the military, but many graduates go on to military service, including nearly 10% who attend the U.S. Naval Academy.

Applicants receive an advantage for acceptance and can start in the military at a higher rank. To apply, students must be U.S. citizens, maintain a C grade point average, be in good health, and be free of felony convictions.

They attend two-week training camps and can choose from various programs including SEAL training. Sea Cadets has chapters in every state except Wyoming, with roughly 8,200 participants.

The program also has exchange programs with 11 countries. It was started in 1958 by the Navy League at the request of the Navy and is funded mostly through federal grants, donations, and fees paid by cadets.
