Chinese Billionaire Admits to Illegal Straw Donation Operation in a Guilty Plea
Scheme Specifics: Funding for New York and Rhode Island Political Campaigns
According to the Blaze Media report, Hui Qin, a Chinese billionaire, has entered a guilty plea to charges of operating an unlawful straw donation operation. He acknowledged contributing over $11,600 to political campaigns in Rhode Island and New York between December 2022 and December 2021. Under Qin’s plan, anybody who contributed to political candidates on his behalf, including as those vying for House seats in both states and citywide posts in New York, would receive their money back. Qin also admitted to lying on his green card application and getting a Florida driver’s license by deception. Under the terms of the plea deal, Qin, who could have faced up to 27 years in prison, consented to renounce his status as a Lawful Permanent Resident and depart the country after serving a maximum of six months.
Allegations of Illicit Foreign Payments prompt an intensified investigation of Adams’ campaign
Qin’s contributions to political campaigns, such as those of Rep. Andrew Garbarino and New York City Mayor Eric Adams, purportedly concealed Qin’s unlawful actions. Adams’ campaign is under investigation by the FBI for allegedly receiving illicit foreign payments from Turkey, and this has increased public interest in the case. Recent FBI raids on the residences of prominent campaign figures, such as chief fundraiser Brianna Suggs and head of Asian relations Winnie Greco, have raised concerns about Adams’ administration even though he denies any involvement. Although the motive of Greco’s raid is still unknown, it doesn’t seem to be connected to the investigation into foreign donations. Adams’s representative has refuted claims that the government post was misused.
