The Annual China Military Power Report Reveals Underestimated Chinese Military Capabilities and Threats to US Security

The most recent Defense Department’s annual China Military Power Report, released on January 29, 2024, has stirred concerns with its revelation of the formidable threat posed by China’s military expansion and aggressive actions. Despite acknowledging the extent of China’s global ambitions and the structural changes led by Chinese leader Xi Jinping, the report appears to underestimate the gravity of the threat, necessitating heightened vigilance and action from the United States.

Highlighting China’s relentless military buildup and modernization endeavors, the report underscores the significant advancements in the Chinese navy and air force. With the expansion of its naval fleet and air assets, including advanced aircraft and rapid nuclear weapon production, China is rapidly bolstering its military might.

Furthermore, the report documents China’s increasingly provocative deployment of military assets, including coercive air intercepts and intimidation tactics against the US and its allies.

However, the report’s reliance on China’s official defense budget figure of $230 billion is seen as a critical shortcoming, as it likely underestimates the actual magnitude of China’s military spending. Analysis suggests that China’s true defense budget is substantially higher, potentially exceeding $700 billion, indicating a significant disparity from the reported figure. The failure to account for research and development spending and differences in purchasing power further contributes to a skewed assessment of China’s military capabilities.

The Defense Department is urged to reevaluate and revise its assessment of China’s defense budget and military capabilities, acknowledging the potential disconnect between the actual threat posed by China and the public perception. Given the concerning underestimation of the threat in the report, it is imperative for the US to carefully reassess China’s military power and take necessary measures to safeguard national security and regional stability.
