Lori Vallow Daybell Trial Involves Doomsday Beliefs

CBS News reported that Prosecutors claimed that in Lori Vallow Daybell trial the couple used “doomsday” beliefs involving zombies to justify murdering the children and Tammy Daybell.   The children’s remains were discovered on Daybell’s property buried.

Lori Vallow Daybell and Chad Daybell were both first arrested in 2020 and eventually in 2021 they were facing multiple charges. Prosecutors called nearly 60 witnesses, and have framed their case around what they said was Vallow Daybell’s drive for money, power, and sex.

The couple has a religious belief at the center of the case, as witnesses attested to the couple’s beliefs in light and evil spirits, their capacity to “cast out” spirits and cause spiritual pain, and their marriage in a past life.

Prosecutor Rob Wood that those three threads and religious beliefs don’t matter but the couple manipulate their friends, he argued, and Vallow Daybell manipulated Chad Daybell through what he called emotional and sexual control.

Vallow Daybell learned the idea from the death of her ex-husband, who had switched the beneficiary of his life insurance to his sister rather than his wife, to conceal the deaths of Tylee and JJ so she could still be collecting their payments, Wood said.

In the closing argument of Defense attorney Jim Archibald on Thursday stated that Vallow Daybell was a dedicated mom who was in love with Chad Daybell whom he characterized as an author going bankrupt who wasn’t successful in luring religious followers, undercutting the prosecution’s argument the murders were motivated by money or power.

The online account showed an exchange of text messages from Vallow Daybell to her husband, her brother, and others. Text conversations between the charged couple appeared to show a premeditated plan to kill Tammy Daybell and the children including a discussion of “the percentage of life left” in two of the victims before their deaths, FBI Special Agent Douglas Hart said during testimony.

Jim Archibald, Vallow Daybell’s attorney, said Thursday that “No one here thinks Lori killed anyone, that’s why she’s being charged with conspiracy.”

Before closing the Lori Vallow Daybell trial on Tuesday, the defense attorney has created a motion called Rule 29 pursuing judgment of acquittal before the case is handed to the jury. Defense attorneys argued that there wasn’t sufficient evidence to warrant the charges against Vallow Daybell but still, Judge Steven Boyce denied the Rule 29 motion on all counts.
