California Researchers’ AI-Powered Simulation Shows Nuclear Bombs as Potential Savior Against Killer Asteroids

In a groundbreaking research endeavor, scientists from California have illustrated the prospective utilization of nuclear bombs as an ultimate defensive measure against catastrophic asteroids on a path toward Earth. Utilizing advanced AI-powered simulations, experts at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) delved into the impact of a nuclear explosion on a substantial celestial body, to evaluate its efficacy as a contingency plan in the event of a failure in NASA’s asteroid-deflection mission.

Their findings showcased two compelling scenarios: the detonation would either successfully divert the asteroid away from Earth or break it into smaller, non-threatening fragments.

Mary Burkey, the leader of this research, emphasized the unmatched energy density ratio of nuclear devices, making them a critical tool in mitigating asteroid threats if there is sufficient warning time. Burkey stressed the importance of accurate predictions, highlighting the complexities and computational demands involved in simulating the impact of nuclear deflection or disruption missions.
