Discover Mars Society’s plans for Red Planet Settlement.
The Mars Society has announced plans to establish the Mars Technology Institute, a non profit organization that will concentrate on the creation of the technology necessary to conduct extended stays on the Martian surface.
The idea of people residing and working on Mars’s surface is no longer science fiction as a new era of human space exploration begins.
But in order for the Red Planet to be habitable, it will be necessary to create the technologies necessary for extended stays on the Martian surface.
Mars Society President and aerospace engineer Robert Zubrin said in a statement that SpaceX and other innovative launch companies are already making tremendous progress in constructing the transportation systems that can take humans to the planet Mars.
Prioritizing Biotech
According to a press release from the Mars Society, a Mars colony will primarily require three things: sources of energy, agricultural land, and severe labor constraints.
The development of robots, automated technologies, and the artificial intelligence required to run such systems may be key to overcoming the labor shortage.
Mars colonies will have to rely on fission nuclear power plants or, if the technology is proven to be practical on Earth, fusion power because there are no fossil fuels to burn on Mars, not enough liquid water to support hydropower, and few prospects for solar and wind power.
Scientists might concentrate on biotech, including genetic engineering and microbial food production, as well as cutting-edge agricultural systems like aquaponics and synthetic biology, to address the shortage of land for agriculture on Red Planet.
The Mars Society recommended that once created for its initial efforts, the MTI should first focus on biotech even though the MTi advisory board has already assembled a group of 12 specialists in the domains of biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and advanced nuclear energy technologies.
Mars Society’s Operation Of Mars Institute
The proposed MTi, according to The Mars Society, ought to be a nonprofit organization that relies on donations that could be claimed as tax deductibles. A totally owned company named Mars Technology Lab (MTL), which might accept contributions from investors, could offer extra assistance to the MTI.
Additionally, the MTL would sublicense MTI-developed technology and irregularly spin off these platforms into new independent businesses. The Mars Society suggested that the MTI would thereafter receive profits from these businesses.
According to the Mars Society, the MTI would have six sources of income: donations, investments, royalties from intellectual property licensing, dividends from spinoff enterprises, and research and development contracts with public and private companies.
To fund the creation of the MTI, the Mars Society is seeking donations.
