China’s space exploration ambitions are reaching new heights with the launch of the “Innovation X Scientific Flight” program. The program, which kicked off on July 27, aims to foster groundbreaking experiments and innovations by providing a platform for in-orbit verification of new science payloads and technologies.
Innovation X Scientific Flight
In a joint endeavor between the Innovation Academy of Microsatellite (IAMCAS) and Zhongke Aerospace Exploration Technology Company, this Innovation X Scientific Flight seeks to propel space science research forward through a series of cost-effective satellite launches.
According to a published article, the brainchild of two Chinese organizations affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the Innovation X Scientific Flight is an amalgamation of the capabilities of IAMCAS and CAS Space. IAMCAS specializes in crafting small satellites, while CAS Space, a spin-off from CAS, has its sights set on both launching satellites into orbit and establishing a burgeoning space tourism business offering suborbital flights.
The core objective of Innovation X Scientific Flight is to offer comprehensive and integrated launch services for global researchers, research institutions, universities, and space companies. The program plans to send a total of seven satellites into space every year using the Lijian-1 (Kinetica-1) solid rocket developed by CAS Space.
This rocket demonstrated its prowess with a successful test flight in July 2022 and later went on to momentarily hold the record for the most satellites launched in a single Chinese mission.
The annual payload of Innovation X Scientific Flight comprises a carefully balanced combination of scientific nanosatellites, microsatellites, and a significant scientific experimental satellite. The lineup includes four nanosatellites weighing 110 pounds (50 kilograms), two microsatellites weighing 220 pounds (100 kilograms), and a scientific experimental satellite tipping the scales at 1,320 pounds (600 kilograms).
Each satellite is equipped with dedicated science payloads, ready to facilitate a wide array of experiments and technology verifications.
