When is the Tax-Free Weekend?

Scheduled to span from Friday through Sunday, the upcoming tax-free weekend event promises a brief reprieve from the state’s 8.25% sales tax for select items, a published article reported.

The Texas Comptroller’s website detailed the eligible items that would enjoy tax exemption in the upcoming tax-free weekend. Among them are essential back-to-school supplies, including school materials, backpacks, clothing, and footwear priced at or under $100.

Both well-known retail giants like Target and Walmart and local establishments scattered across the region are set to take part in this eagerly awaited promotion during the upcoming tax-free weekend. For many, this event presents an opportunity to save money while acquiring much-needed school supplies for their children.

Tax-Free Weekend Surprise

As the tax-free weekend arrive, however, some residents seemed to be taken by surprise. Abbie Brysch, a Victoria resident, confessed, “I guess it was a coincidence. It was a tax-free weekend, and we wanted to get in,” as she loaded a shopping cart with clothes while her daughter rode along.

Robyn Hartman from Hallettsville echoed this sentiment, stating, “I didn’t plan to shop on tax-free weekend. It just happened.” Normally, tax-free weekends were scheduled a week before the commencement of the school year. However, due to a February change in Victoria public schools’ academic calendar, this year’s tax-free weekend ended up aligning with a period after the school year had already begun.

Kelly High, the owner of High-Brehm Hats & Western, remarked, “So this year, it’s happening after the school year started and that may have caught some folks off guard.” This change might have contributed to some residents not being fully aware of the tax-free weekend opportunity.

Despite the timing confusion, customers and business owners alike expressed their enthusiasm for the event.

Business owners were also pleased with the boost in business that the weekend brought. In light of the event’s popularity, the business owners extended their business hours for the weekend to give customers more time to take advantage of the special deals during the tax-free weekend.
